How to play Borderline

Borderline is a number puzzle game about finding connected groups that share one equal total. Play the daily 5×5, the longer 7×7 Expert, or race through timed 3×3 boards in Daily and Unlimited Blitz.

  1. Choose a color and click, tap, or drag across connected squares. Squares connect up, down, left, or right—never diagonally.
  2. Watch the running total. A correct line locks automatically.
  3. Complete the grid without revealing hints to build your clean-solve streak.
  4. Play your way. Show the timer for a pace challenge or hide it for a less pressured solve. Timing continues in the background, and your browser remembers the display setting.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Borderline FAQ

What is Borderline?

Borderline is a free math and logic game. In the Borderline game, you divide every square into connected lines that all add up to the same total.

Is Borderline a math game?

Yes. Borderline combines quick mental addition with spatial logic and puzzle solving. The timed 3×3 Blitz modes turn that same idea into a faster challenge.

Which puzzle is the daily Borderline game?

The 5×5 is Borderline’s main daily puzzle. A new board is available each day, and the 7×7 offers a longer expert challenge.

Can I play more than one puzzle per day?

Yes. Borderline includes the daily 5×5, a longer 7×7 Expert puzzle, one shared Daily Blitz, and replayable Unlimited Blitz runs.

How does Borderline Blitz work?

Blitz starts with 30 seconds. Complete each 3×3 board to earn more time; the bonus gradually shrinks as your run gets deeper. Daily Blitz gives everyone the same board sequence and one official result each day. Unlimited Blitz serves fresh validated boards. Neither Blitz mode has hints or a pause button.

How can squares connect?

Squares connect only up, down, left, or right. Diagonal squares do not touch, and every line must contain exactly as many squares as the board is wide.

Can I hide the timer?

Yes. You can hide the timer for any puzzle, and Borderline remembers that preference in your browser. Timing continues in the background, and your solve time appears when you finish or show the timer again.

How do hints and clean streaks work?

Tap the hint button to flag all confidently incorrect selected squares at once. If the selected squares are correct—or the intended line is still ambiguous—the hint reveals one correct square instead. Hold the button to reveal and lock the full line. Any hint breaks the daily clean-solve streak.

What are the desktop keyboard controls?

After starting the puzzle, Tab into the grid. Use the arrow keys to move between squares, and press Space or Enter to select or clear the focused square. Press H at any time during play for a short hint, or press C to clear all unfinished selections while keeping completed lines locked. Use Tab to reach the line-color buttons, hint button, reset control, and other controls; activate them with Space or Enter. Holding Space or Enter on the focused hint button reveals the full line.

Do I need an account to play Borderline?

No. Borderline plays directly in your browser, and no account is required.

What gameplay data does Borderline collect?

Borderline collects limited anonymous gameplay events—such as puzzle starts, completions, hints, and board size—to improve its puzzles. We do not collect names, email addresses, precise locations, IP addresses, or advertising identifiers. Anonymous browser IDs rotate every 90 days, and detailed event history is limited to a rolling 90-day reporting window.
